LEIFast

Who it is for

Who needs an LEI in Canada?

Canadian entities may be asked for an LEI in derivatives reporting, securities operations, fund administration and international banking. A natural person acting in their own name usually does not need one.

Securities and brokerage

A broker may need an active LEI to identify a Canadian entity before a reportable securities transaction.

Derivatives and reporting

Derivatives reporting and counterparty records may require the LEI for the exact Canadian entity, not a related company.

Banking, loans, treasury

Banks can use the LEI alongside the corporation number or registry number in institutional KYC, lending and treasury workflows.

Funds and counterparties

Funds, subsidiaries and special-purpose vehicles are distinct legal entities and cannot simply use a parent’s LEI.

Cross-border finance

Canadian registry numbers vary by jurisdiction; an LEI gives counterparties one identifier they can verify in the global GLEIF index.

Current GLEIF status

An existing code still needs annual renewal; counterparties can see when its status becomes Lapsed.

Not sure? Search the index for the company’s legal name. No hit usually means it does not have one yet.
