LEIFast

Who it is for

Who needs an LEI code?

Legal entities need an LEI when financial rules or a bank, broker or other counterparty requires one. Individuals acting in their own name generally do not.

MiFID II EMIR Banks DORA MiCA

Securities and MiFID II

Investment firms use LEIs to identify legal-entity clients in transaction reporting. Your broker can confirm whether a planned trade requires one.

Derivatives and EMIR

Legal-entity counterparties are identified by LEI in derivative reporting. A Lapsed record may not meet a counterparty’s requirements.

Banking and treasury

Banks may ask for an LEI during corporate onboarding, lending, treasury services or certain payment processes.

Funds, issuers and SPVs

A fund, issuer, SPV or subsidiary may require its own LEI. Another group company’s code does not identify it.

Financial-sector suppliers

Financial institutions may request LEIs from third-party providers for consistent identification in their records.

Crypto-asset businesses

An LEI may be used in licensing, reporting or counterparty records under applicable crypto-asset rules.

Not sure whether the entity already has a code? Search the GLEIF index by legal name before applying. Your bank, broker or adviser can confirm whether you are required to obtain one.
