  • A GLEIF-accredited LEI issuer (LOU) validates and issues the code.

You may need an LEI when a bank, broker or regulator must identify your legal entity.

Securities and MiFID II

Legal entities trading shares, bonds or other reportable instruments are commonly asked for an active LEI.

Derivatives and EMIR

Derivative reporting identifies legal-entity counterparties by LEI. The record generally needs to be current.

Banking and treasury

Banks may request an LEI for onboarding, lending, treasury activity or certain cross-border payments.

Funds and special-purpose entities

Funds, issuers, SPVs and subsidiaries may each need their own identifier; a parent’s LEI is not a substitute.

Financial-sector suppliers

Financial clients may request an LEI when recording and assessing third-party providers.

Crypto-asset services

Regulated crypto businesses may use LEIs in licensing, reporting and counterparty identification.

An LEI is a unique 20-character identifier for a legal entity.

Built to ISO 17442, an LEI links a legal entity to a public GLEIF record containing its official name, registered address, status and, where applicable, parent information.

Banks, brokers and regulators use that record to identify the same entity across systems and borders. The code remains the same, but its reference data must be confirmed each year to keep the status current.

LEIFast is a Registration Agent, not an issuer or LOU. We collect and check the application and submit it to the GLEIF-accredited issuing LOU, which validates and issues the LEI.

LEI questions, answered clearly.

A Legal Entity Identifier is a unique 20-character code for a legal entity. Its reference data is public in the GLEIF index.

Legal entities may need one to trade certain financial instruments, report derivatives, use financial services or meet a bank’s or counterparty’s requirements.

A GLEIF-accredited LEI issuer (LOU) validates and issues the code. LEIFast acts as the Registration Agent.

Qualified applications can be issued on the same working day. Missing evidence, complex ownership or further validation can take longer.

The code remains assigned, but its reference data must be confirmed annually. A one-year plan is self-renewed; our 3- and 5-year plans include annual confirmations during the term.

Renew it if LEIFast already manages the record. If another provider manages it, transfer it first at no extra charge. The code stays the same.

The annual confirmation is overdue. The code still identifies the entity, but many counterparties require the registration status to be Issued.

We need the legal name, registry details, addresses, contact information and, where applicable, accounting-parent information.

They may be required to prove authority to act, an accounting-parent relationship or details that cannot be verified in a public register.

Use our LEI search to query the GLEIF index and verify the entity, registration status and next renewal date.
