LEIFast

Who it is for

Who needs an LEI in Estonia?

If a bank, broker or regulator must identify your Estonian company, you need one. A natural person in their own name does not. One legal entity, one LEI. That includes a company run by an e-resident.

MiFID II EMIR Banks DORA MiCA

Securities and MiFID II

A broker must identify a legal-entity client before dealing in shares, bonds or listed instruments. They will ask for an Issued LEI, not only the Estonian registry code.

EMIR derivatives

EMIR reporting uses an active LEI to identify each counterparty to a derivatives transaction.

Banking, loans, treasury

A bank may request the company’s LEI for onboarding, financing or a cross-border transaction. Check that GLEIF shows status Issued.

Funds and counterparties

A parent’s LEI does not identify the Estonian subsidiary. Funds, SPVs and issuers each need their own code.

DORA / ICT providers

A financial client may request an LEI when recording or assessing an Estonian ICT provider under DORA-related processes.

MiCA / crypto services

Crypto-asset firms may use an LEI in authorisation, reporting or counterparty records where the applicable MiCA process requests one.

Not sure? Search the index for the company’s legal name. No hit usually means the Estonian company does not have one yet.
